We share an overview of its history below.

It Began With Mushrooms

Back in 1970, Eric Wood, an architectural engineer, needed a quick-fix solution for his mushroom beds. But, removing the pipe wasn’t a feasible option because of the duct configuration. So, he came up with the cured-in-place piping (CIPP) solution, which is commonly used for trenchless pipe lining. This technology works by applying a new coating inside the damaged pipe.

From Excavation to Pipe Bursting

In the mid-1970s, contractors searched for more accessible means of breaking older underground pipes, especially cast iron pipes, for replacement. And that’s when an engineer came up with the trenchless pipe replacement, also known as pipe bursting. The process takes place by breaking the existing pipes and replacing them with new ones of the same diameter. Given its convenience, many plumbing companies adopted this technology.

Other Trenchless Developments

In the late 1970s, a new trenchless technology was developed, which is known as micro-tunneling. This process involves installing underground pipes in areas where the soil is loose and wet. With time, other trenchless techniques such as point repair and directional boring also evolved. These are no-dig approaches to trenchless sewer repair in Cape Coral, FL for smaller parts of a pipe.

Trenchless Technology for Everyone
